The total number of speakers of the various Tai languages is greater than 80 million. Fifty five million or so live in modern Thailand. Most of the others are scattered in southern China, Laos, Myanmar, northern Vietnam, Assam, and India. The Tai linguistic branch is shown below (Edmondson, 1997:3). It is hoped that in the future this web site can be used to stimulate interest in all of these groups, but for now, it is focused on the Black, Red, and White Tai of Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand.
